How’s your Life as a Software Developer

“99 little bugs in the code

99 bugs in the code

1 bug fixed…compile again

100 little bugs in the code”

This joke explains to the “normal people” what the life of a software developer is. You fix one problem, another one develops. By the time you have fixed the code, your day is over.

But I assure you it is far from it. Like with any profession, there are ups and downs. To be a software developer, you either have it in you or not. If you cannot eat, live, breathe and sleep 0s and 1s, you cannot be a developer. To become one, all you need to do is attend a few IT Courses in Ahmadabad; this means no university or college.

Software-Developer

Here I will tell you what my life is all about, the ups and downs, the insecurities, the good and boring things about my job. Like all jobs, the life of a software developer has the good, the bad and the ugly.

THE GOOD…

The reason we pursue a certain profession is for two things, our interest and the earning potential. As a developer, you earn a nice little number. Compared to other IT jobs, I am better paid. Better pay means a better life for me and the family.

As a developer I have the added advantage that I can work from anywhere. All I need is a laptop and a good internet connection. The other good thing about my job is that I am not tied to certain work timings. I come and go as I please, keeping in mind that I have completed my task for the day.

You tend to learn different skills and programmes from different employers, thus building up on your skills and limitations. Of course what you have learnt in one company will definitely help you when you decide to look for pastures new; not to forget the pay hike.

My work is not affected by weather conditions, come rain or snow. Employers tend to give good working environment to developers; air conditioning, comfortable chairs, fast broadband connection.

I have an added advantage as a software developer. I am kept up to date with all the latest happenings as far as technologies and inventions are concerned. I learn new things every day in the course of my work, from projects and from my office colleagues. This in turn increases my experience.

THE BAD…

With changes in technology and new languages coming up every day, I have to keep myself updated on the latest happenings otherwise I will be left behind in the rat race.

My job involves sitting and staring at the screen day in day out. Not every body’s cup of tea.

We work to very tight deadlines, sometimes spending sleepless nights and giving up weekends to finish projects.

AND THE UGLY…

We are considered as geeks or nerds who have no decent conversation topic and therefore we have no social life. The long hours we put in means we do not have time for personal relationships.

That is not really true. Apart from the long hours we do know how to hold a decent conversation.

Other jobs will come and go, or be taken over by software and computers but the job of a developer will never go. There will always be a need for developers to help code these software.

Isn’t this a good enough reason to get some IT coaching in Ahmadabad and make your future?
